April 28 International passengers taking connecting flights to destinations within India from Indira Gandhi International Airport will have it good, as DIAL plans to introduce more inter-terminal coaches from May onwards. “A good percentage of passengers arriving at IGIA are transit passengers, especially international tourists, who alight in Delhi and take connecting flights to their destinations,” said Arun Arora, DIAL spokesperson. At the moment, two coaches run between the international and domestic terminals. Their frequency is one per hour but sometimes passengers end up waiting for a longer duration.“The number of coaches will go up to four now and the waiting time will come down to 20 minutes,” said a senior DIAL officer. More coaches have also been added between terminals 1-A and 1-B. The service is free for passengers. The shuttle service begins at 5 am and stops at midnight.

3/3/08 If you have a flight to catch at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, reach the airport at least four hours before your flight departs. If you don’t, you are sure to miss your flight. Passenger queues and, consequently, waiting time to board a flight were never so long than they are now at the Indira Gandhi International Airport, the rush blamed on an ambitious renovation and modernisation programme the airport is going through. The ordeal begins for passengers on the approach roads to the airport itself. Even late in the night, the roads are congested despite the newly opened Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway. “After you enter the IGIA approach road from National Highway-8, a long queue of cars greets you. Sometimes the queue starts from near the Centaur hotel,” said a senior official of a foreign airline. Gate no. 3 of the departure terminal is meant for 10 airlines, including Air India, American Airlines and Saudi Arabian, and any of the other three gates can be used for other airlines. Most passengers, however, don’t know this and complain about lack of enough signboards. Entering the airport after checking of tickets and passport has become the biggest hurdle lately. It can take you up to 45 minutes at Gate 1 and more than an hour at the other gates. Boarding blockages “Space for boarding queues is extremely limited, leading to chaos. Simultaneous boarding from Gates 9, 10 and 11 is another problem,” an airline official said. “If the passenger has to be sent back to X-ray area for missing stamps, the delay gets longer,” he said.

Madness at Delhi airport Passengers trying to board flights at the Indira Gandhi International Airport have fainted or have had epileptic fits due to the claustrophobic conditions prompted by construction work that has led to the closure of large chunks of areas, airlines operating from the airport have said. “Our flights are getting delayed by 30 to 45 minutes as congestion in the terminals mean passengers report late and we cannot close the counters in time. The frequent breakdown of the conveyor belt also leads to delay in loading baggage in aircraft,” said an Air India spokesman per Hindustan Times
New Delhi, March 03, 2008
Mumbai: Sri Lankan Airlines has announced the launch of its 'Online Check-in' facility for passengers traveling on the airline from Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, New Delhi. It said New Delhi has become the first overseas station where it has introduced the facility. Sri Lankan said that 'Online Check-in' opens 24 hours before a flight and continues up to two hours before a flight. It is possible to check-in groups of passengers as well if the required information and reference numbers are available.
According to the airline, a passenger simply needs to visit Sri Lankan's website www.srilankan.aero and click on ''Online Check-in.'' The next step is to merely key in four simple entries - name, airport, flight number and booking reference number. The system will automatically assign a seat, which the passenger can change through a user-friendly chart that shows the aircraft's seating plan, identifying reserved seats in a different colour.
The boarding pass is then displayed on the screen, with all necessary details. Passengers can take a printout of their boarding pass, although it is not required since they can produce the e-ticket at the airport and receive a printout of the boarding pass from SriLankan staff. Passengers can then proceed directly to the Online Check-in counter.
Currently, passengers who require special care such as infants and wheelchair passengers will continue to be handled by SriLankan staff, and not through the on-line system.
''India is an important market for us and Online Check-in is a major initiative that is part of our ongoing plans to improve the services for everyone traveling on SriLankan Airlines,'' said Senaka Fernando, SriLankan's regional manager, Indian subcontinent and the Maldives.
